What is AVID? (Video)

FAFSA Information Sheet

When your child is ready to apply for colleges, you will fill out the FAFSA form to determine how much financial aid your child may qualify for. The attached document answers some FAQs regarding the FAFSA application process.

Open Access to Rigorous Courses

All Central Middle students are placed into rigorous courses as appropriate to the student, using their previous year's achievement data to guide scheduling decisions. Students must go through a formal down-phase process to ensure supports are in place before students may be removed from a rigorous course. It is our philosophy at Central Middle to allow open access to these demanding courses to any student. This philosophy can be seen in action in the absence of course prerequisites or teacher approval requirements for RISE, Algebra I Honors, or Spanish I classes.

CMS AVID Elective Selection Criteria

AVID students are in the academic middle, capable of completing a college/career preparatory path with support. These students often do not realize their full potential academically. In the identification process, a number of criteria are considered, including:

  • State Standardized Test Scores - Near/At Standard

  • Grades – Academically “in the middle”

  • Attendance – good attendance (absent <9 days per semester)

  • Desire and determination – wants to go to college and is willing to work hard

  • Students may be from a group historically underrepresented in college or have a circumstance that may affect their path to college (first in the family to go to college, teen parent, single-parent household, deceased parent, homeless/living in transition, foster care/kinship etc.)

  • Classroom behavior – must have good behavior with no major disciplinary infractions

  • Complete the application process

While all of the criteria are considered for acceptance into the AVID program, no single criteria will eliminate a student from consideration. All students at CMS are eligible to apply and be considered for an available spot in the AVID elective.

Once selected for AVID, What are the requirements?

AVID students must:

  • Be enrolled in an AVID elective class.

  • Enroll in at least one rigorous course in 8th grade offered at CMS, including but not limited to any honors course or any high school credit course, as recommended by the student’s guidance counselor.

  • Maintain satisfactory citizenship and attendance in all classes.

  • Maintain the AVID binder with assignments and daily notes in all classes.

  • Complete all homework assignments and commit to studying every night.

  • Participate in all class activities, including Tutorials.
