Middle Years Programme

Candidate School*

Central Middle School is a Candidate School* for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) in partnership with Melbourne High School and Hoover Middle School. The MYP provides a world class education to all students in grades 7-10.

The MYP emphasizes:

  • Eight Subject Groups: Students study a course in language and literature (ELA), language acquisition (world language), individuals and societies (social studies), sciences, mathematics, arts, design (CTE), and physical health education (PE).

  • Core Components: Teachers use the MYP elements as a framework to deliver the Florida Standards.

    • Concepts and Contexts- help students connect their learning to the real world.

    • Skills development- provides students with approaches to learning skills and strategies to communicate, collaborate, research, self-manage and think.

    • Community engagement- students engage with their communities and make a positive impact in the world around them.

    • Interdisciplinary learning- teachers design opportunities for students to apply their learning across subjects.

    • 8th grade Community Project and 10th grade Personal Project - culminating project where students apply their skills to take action to showcase their learning in the programme.

The MYP prepares students for success in the IB Diploma Programme (DP), IB Career-related Programme (CP), and other rigorous academic courses/programs by fostering a lifelong love of learning.

Students interested in being on a pathway to the IB DP or IB CP which starts in grade 11 can apply to be MYP Candidates at Central Middle School and must re-apply when transitioning to Melbourne High School. MYP Candidates take all MYP courses, complete rigorous coursework, and additional requirements as they move through grades 7-12.
